With rumours of a summer move for Lautaro Martinez intensifying, Former Barcelona and Inter Milan forward Samuel Eto’o has urged the Catalan club to not forsake Luis Suarez in their pursuit of the Argentine striker with Eto’o hailing the Uruguayan as one of the best strikers in the world.
In an interview with ‘Tot Costa’ de Catalunya Ràdio, he said: “I love Suarez, he’s one of the best in the world in his position.
“Barça always have to strengthen, but they don’t need to stand down a general like Luis Suarez. In his position, he’s a general and you cannot compare him with anyone.
“Lautaro is doing really well with Inter and has a future, but people have a tendency to forget recent history and Luis is writing history, not just at Barça, but in football. That has to be recognized.
“That doesn’t impede bringing in another player to add competition to the group, knowing how many games Barça have, but a little respect for those that have written history.”
Eto’o then spoke about Xavi’s possible return to Barca: “I spoke with him not long ago and I said, ‘Whatever happens, you have to return to Barça and become manager, but you have to return while the football God is still there,’ because it’s easier for any coach with Lionel Messi.
“Xavi has been one of the best midfielders in the world and will always step forward, that’s important for coaches. He has it all to be a coach and I am excited to see him on the bench, Victor Valdes, too.”
